Te Hora Marae

Ngāti Kuia Pākohe carver, Lewis Smith, with his whānau at the Ngā Pakiaka Mōrehu o te Whenua wānanga on Sunday.

Lewis has his work available on both sides of Tūtūmāpou. In Nelson, it's at Nelson Provincial Museum and in Blenheim, it's at the Millennium Public Art Gallery.

Ngā Pakiaka Mōrehu o te Whenua
Lewis and Sophie Smith have supported the Ngā Pakiaka concept from our very first wānanga and are regular attendees.

In this video, Lewis explains how he finds value in what we do, especially as a carver who is heavily influenced by the style of our early tupuna from this area.

Lewis and Sophie recently launched their own business initiative, Te Tauihu Taonga. Ngā Pakiaka are pleased to announced that we will be partnering with them in the near future on an exciting new business venture. Details coming soon...

Te Hora Marae

A fantastic story about Saturday's commemoration service at Whakatu marae for the Māori Battalion, featuring many of our own whānau and iwi members.

Te Karere
In Nelson, locals paid homage to their soldiers and veterans at Whakatū Marae. But it's been a long road for the community who have been hoping to host Anzac commemorations in the area for years. Hania Douglas - Te Karere has this report.

Tomorrow nights Te Pātaka o Wairau Night Market at Seymour Square in Blenheim will be a great opportunity for some of our Ngāti Kuia whānau to display their wares...Ngā Pakiaka Mōrehu o te Whenua would like to encourage you all to head down and support Te Pātaka o Wairau Night Market tomorrow evening at Seymour Square from 4-8pm.

It's a wonderful community Kaupapa and initiative that provides welcome exposure for some of our locally grown whānau businesses and artists.

Te Tauihu Taonga

NPMotW member, Lewis Smith, will be there with a beautiful selection of unique handcrafted taonga. Lewis' taonga are one-off pieces that are created from locally sourced materials such as Pākohe and various forms of pounamu.

When creating his taonga, Lewis draws his inspiration and ideas from his evolving knowledge of the rich history here in Te Tauihu and is also influenced by his Ngāti Kuia whakapapa.

As well as offering a limited collection of taonga tomorrow evening, Lewis will also be displaying early adze making tools.

He will also be unveiling a replica jewellery piece that he has recreated from a taonga which was found in the Moa Hunter Collection at the Wairau Bar.
